Now, you wouldn’t be working in a hospital or anywhere like that, but as a Production Engineer in this business in West Yorkshire, you’d be involved in the design and manufacture of products that contribute towards keeping people safe.

Ideally, you’ll come from an automotive background or somewhere like ‘big’ or ‘heavy’ manufacturing, and if you’re enthusiastic, creative and have a real passion for making improvements, you should fit right in.

You’ll be optimising processes across the site as you look to cut down waste, maximise efficiency and also educate people in the business on the fundamentals of lean and continuous improvement tools. Currently, everything is bespoke and made to order, and while they’re looking to keep elements of that, they also want to start having standard products available so they can satisfy their high demand in a faster way, so part of your job will be providing input on how to standardise certain processes within the business.

You’ll have the opportunity to do some design work too (using Solidworks or ideally Creo), as you work with the design team to provide jig, fixture and tooling designs for new and existing product ranges.

The business was once very traditional and has now grown year on year, making massive improvements already on their ‘journey to the 21st century’, but they’re not as complex as needing a Six Sigma expert right now; they’re in need of a hands on, driven engineer that can roll their sleeves up when needed and who has a decent understanding of lean principles to make proactive improvements across the site.

The salary will probably fall somewhere around the £40/45k mark and you’d be based at the site just outside of Wakefield.
