Well the company I’m working with basically makes sure that people go to work and come home to their families every night. How rewarding does that sound?
Ok, I know it doesn’t sound much like an engineering job right now, so I’ll elaborate. As you’d imagine, some of the biggest and oldest manufactures in the country have some pretty old equipment. What you’ll basically be doing is putting systems and controls in place to make sure the operators are safe and sound.
Initially you’ll spend a decent amount of time on site installation work, commissioning and functional testing of control panels & circuits. That obviously means you recognised qualifications in electrical engineering, with controls knowledge and the ability to use AutoCAD/SEE Electrical will come in handy.
You’re probably going to want to get involved with the in-house specification and design of safety related control systems too at some stage, which they’d be more than happy to teach if you haven’t done it before.
Providing technical support for customers and designing and specification of safety related control system upgrades for machinery will be a theme as well but you’ll move further from the tools as time goes by & you move into Project Management.
Despite being fairly small right now the company really well thought of by the likes of BAE, Tata, Cummins, Diageo and Network Rail (to name a few) which hopefully should give some confidence that it’s here to stay and it can provide a real platform for you to grow as well.
The size of the business means there’s likely to be a lot of variation in the job. It’s not like these massive outfits where you look after your own little, tiny piece of the pie and focus on getting that right. Now and then you’ll probably end up lumping things around, sweeping up and answering the phone. You’d be surprised how many people think they’re above that kind of thing…
Salary wise, we’re looking at something in the region of £40k to £45k (plus overtime) to start with. Though I’d imagine that could grow as your time and influence on the business grows.
